History

Under the guidance of Dr. Benjamim Jacob de Souza, Hospital Imaculada Conceição began its activities in 1919 through a partnership intended to establish and maintain a hospital in the city of Curvelo, State of Minas Gerais. On January 1, 1920, with the support of Major Salvo, Dr. Pacífico Mascarenhas, federal congressman Dr. Augusto de Vianna do Castelo, Antônio Octaviano de Alvarenga, José Barata, Franklin Quinta and Silva, and an audience of enthusiasts for local progress, the first administrative board was formed, responsible for the important decisions that started the hospital’s operation on January 20, 1920.

On May 2, 1920, after the blessing by the Archbishop of Diamantina, Dom Joaquim Silvério de Souza, the foundation stone of the hospital was laid. On June 21, 1921, four pavilions were inaugurated, with a structure of 20 beds, aseptic surgeries with ether anesthesia, local and regional spinal anesthesia.

In 1922, two more pavilions were opened, with two operating rooms and one aseptic room, in addition to 30 beds in the male ward. In 1944, after the Hospital closed, Dr. Olavo Gabriel Diniz, Dr. Benjamim Jacob’s son-in-law, invited Dr. Viana Espechit to resume the direction of the institution. He accepted the responsibility and invited the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul to take over the internal administration of the Hospital. The Sisters resided on nearby land, where they also maintained a daycare center.

After several meetings to resolve the financial situation of the Hospital and establish whether a funding entity was needed, the members held a meeting and decided to donate the land and the buildings erected on it to the São Vicente de Paulo Association.

The Hospital was donated to the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, currently called Organização Religiosa São Vicente de Paulo (Saint Vincent de Paul Religious Organization), on January 21, 1963.
